Installation
and operation.
For the fixing arrangement supplied with your unit. If your post, spacers or fittings differ, send us a photograph for advice before installation.
Fit the specified spacers
- Open both bins and remove the liners. Place the bin halves face down on a non-abrasive surface; use cardboard or other protection rather than resting them directly on the pavement.
- Identify the spacers specified for each location. The suffix T identifies the top spacer; B identifies the bottom spacer.
- Fit the smaller T spacers in the uppermost slots, with the tabs pointing downwards and the top of each spacer flush with the top of the bin.
- Fit the larger B spacers in the lowest slots, with the tabs pointing upwards and the bottom of each spacer nearly flush with the bottom of the bin.
- For a waisted post, the survey may specify a T spacer in the band one position above the base. Where specified, fit it with the same orientation as a top spacer.
Rubber pads and larger columns
- For the pad-and-spacer arrangement described in the supplied guide for columns up to 122 mm diameter, fit the specified spacers in the lowest slots.
- Apply a strip of eight supplied rubber pads to each mid-spacer band on each bin half. These are the raised bands corresponding to the middle slot locations. Peel the pads from their backing as one strip.
- Use the arrangement specified for the individual post; ask us with a photo if the supplied parts or post dimensions differ.
Intermediate sideplates
- The supplied guide specifies intermediate sideplates for posts larger than 122 mm diameter. Fit the appropriate spacers to the bin castings first.
- Position a sideplate on each side of the post. Orient each sideplate so its profile matches the bin profile.
- Offer each bin half up to the sideplates and fit the nuts to the protruding screw bosses.
- Tighten the fastenings progressively, keeping a constant gap between each sideplate and the bin. Check that the complete assembly is securely fixed.
Railing-mounted Smartbin
- Open the door, remove the liner and separate the bin body from the backplate.
- Offer the railing bars up to the railings, with their threaded portions on either side of the appropriate upright.
- Pass the threaded portions through the backplate slots. Fit the large washers and nuts, then tighten each nut in turn to clamp the bars and backplate to the railings.
- Check that the bin will be vertical before final tightening. Fit the bin body to the backplate using the wall-mounted procedure, then insert the liner and lock the door.
Post-mounted twin Smartbin
- Open both bin doors with the supplied key and remove the liners.
- Remove the four fixing bolts, nuts and washers, if fitted to hold the units together for transport. Fit the spacers in the appropriate positions if they are not already fitted.
- Installation is best carried out by two people: one holding the bins in place and the other fitting and tightening the fastenings. Offer both halves up to the post at a usable height. Check that the spacers remain seated. Orient the bin openings along the direction of pavement traffic so people can approach from either direction.
- Pass the fixing bolts through both halves with a washer behind each bolt head, then fit a washer and nut to each threaded end. Tighten diagonally first, then tighten each bolt in turn until the unit grips the post. Keep the gap between the bin halves equal on both sides; keep a gap of approximately 3 mm.
- Check that the unit is securely fixed. To reposition it, loosen all bolts until the bin can move, adjust the position, then retighten.
- For a waisted post, keep the bin’s lower edge clear of the waisted section; the supplied spacer guide advises a 5 mm clearance. Check that both doors open freely. Insert the liners, close the doors and lock with the key.
Wall-mounted Smartbin
- Open the bin door with the supplied key and remove the liner.
- Remove the four fixing nuts and washers from the threaded studs and separate the backplate from the bin body.
- Hold the backplate against the wall at a usable height. Make sure it is level and mark the mounting screw positions.
- Drill the mounting holes and secure the backplate using suitable weatherproof fixings. Use the supplied screws only if they are appropriate for the mounting surface.
- Offer the bin body onto the backplate. Fit the washers and nuts to the threaded studs and tighten each nut in turn. Check that the bin is securely fixed.
- Insert the liner, close the door and lock with the key.
Emptying and operation
Wear heavy-duty gloves when operating the bins because hazardous waste, such as needles, may have been placed inside.
Keep the key in a safe place. Unlock and open the bin at regular intervals, lift out the liner and empty it into a suitable fire-resistant refuse container or bag.
If gum or other litter is stuck inside, slide the liner front off and use it to scrape the remaining litter into the waste receptacle.
Slide the liner front back onto the emptied liner, return the assembled liner to the bin, then close and lock the door. Repeat for each liner.
Applying post graphics
Apply the post graphics just above the unit, with the arrows pointing down towards the bin openings. Leave a 10 mm gap from the top of the bin to the arrow point.
Where a post has an anti-graffiti or anti-sticker coating, apply the supplied black base sticker around the pole so it adheres to itself. Align its bottom edge with the top of the installed Smartbin. Check its size before peeling off the backing and avoid wrinkles.
Peel the backing from the arrow stickers and apply one to each side of the post, over the black base sticker where used. Align each sticker vertically and point the arrow towards the bin opening.
