A practical buying guide
Outdoor cigarette bins.
Part of the street.
Choose cigarette and chewing gum disposal that works with the street you already have.
Smartstreets-Smartbins™ fit around suitable lamp posts and sign posts, creating convenient disposal points without adding separate freestanding bins. The twin-bin design integrates with the column, concealing the fixings for a streamlined appearance.
Our distinctive approach
A useful addition.
Not another obstruction.
A lamp post is already part of the street scene. Give it another useful job.
Smartbin’s mounting innovation brings two bins together around the post, with the fittings concealed inside the assembly. Rounded contours and no exposed mounting bolts give the installation a smooth profile, designed to minimise projections that could snag clothing.
Colour-match the bins to the column for a discreet, integrated appearance, or choose a contrasting finish to make disposal points easier to notice.
Each fixing arrangement is specified for the location. Post dimensions, access panels, pedestrian space and servicing requirements all inform the choice.

Which cigarette bin fits your location?
Post-mounted cigarette bins
Twin bins face opposite directions along the pavement. Use suitable existing lamp columns and sign posts to create a recognisable disposal network.
Record each column’s dimensions and check access panels before specifying the fixings.

A solo Smartbin with a stainless steel backplate provides a disposal option where a suitable wall is available.
Consider where people pause, how the bin will be serviced and the suitability of the wall and fixings.

A solo bin can be specified with railing brackets. Photographs and measurements help us assess the arrangement.
Check railing dimensions, pedestrian clearance and access for emptying.

Choose locations before quantities.
Look at cigarette-litter hotspots, entrances, places where people pause and the routes they take. A visible cigarette disposal bin in a useful location has a clearer purpose than an isolated bin placed wherever there happens to be room.
Plan the network with your cleansing team. Consider visibility, pedestrian access, collection routes and column maintenance. There is no single spacing rule that suits every street.

Think beyond the purchase.
Compare the mounting arrangement, finish, liner access, replacement parts and ongoing servicing as well as the initial price. Smartbin bodies are made from gravity die-cast aluminium, treated and powder coated, with removable stainless steel liners.
Your quotation should identify whether quantities refer to individual bins or twin assemblies, together with the specified fittings, delivery and any installation work.

Evidence from a coordinated scheme
See what happened in the City of London.
The published case study reports a 64% reduction in smoking-related litter within a coordinated programme that combined a disposal network with communication and public engagement. This is evidence from that historical programme, rather than a promise that bins alone will produce the same result everywhere.
What about disposal on the move?
Minibin pocket ashtrays complement fixed outdoor cigarette bins by giving people a portable disposal option. They are a separate product for personal use and campaign distribution.

What should you send us for a quotation?
Your organisation, approximate number of locations, preferred mounting options and a few photographs are a useful start. For post-mounted bins, measurements are needed before the fixing arrangement can be confirmed. Ask about a self-survey pack or a chargeable survey visit.
